Welcome to the Lanyon Literacy 2012 Wiki space. On this page you will find a link to your own page, as well as links to the pages of your peers. The Book Review page link takes you to a page where you can write about a book that you have read. You may like to share what you liked or disliked about the book, you might like to recommend the book, or just simply make a comment about it. This is a great place to find new books to read. We will also set you some simple tasks to guide you There is also a page for Tutors and Parents.

Task 1

You have already joined the wiki so now we'd like you to open your page and post a picture that you think of or visualise when you are reading your current book. Visualising is what good readers do! You can find the picture/photo/image on the internet. After posting it, write one or two sentences on why you chose it. You can also post the pictures that you drew which involved visualising the story. If you need help, talk to Jess during 'Jess time'.

Task 2

Has your book been turned into a movie? If so how does it compare? If not, would your book make a good movie? Why/Why not?

Task 3

Find an interesting paragraph in the book you are reading and post it to the wiki. Then write 2-3 sentences explaining why you chose it. It could be because of the author's choice of words and the way it is written to describe a character or setting or to build suspense and excitement. You may have chosen it because it revealed some important information about the plot or the characters. You may also have chosen it because you connected to it in some way or it reminded you of something in your own life or something else you have read or watched. Connecting to a text is what good readers do!

Task 4

Read the post of one other student - please don't edit anything on the student's page. Then go to the discussion thread I have started, Comments on each other's posts, and write a comment to the student. Start with: Hi ......... I have just read your page. I like how you ........

Task 5

Besides visualising, good readers also make predictions. Think about where you are up to in your book right now. What do you predict will happen next? What makes you think that? What words (besides simple words like and, then because etc) do you think will occur in the story.

Task 6

Now reflect on whether your prediction was correct or not. How was it the same and different to what actually happened in the story. What words occurred that you predicted. Write 5 more interesting words that you did not predict. Predicting is what good readers do!

Task 7

Your next task is to practise the reading strategy of comparing. Comparing is what good readers do!! So I'd like you to compare two of the books you have read. There are lots of things to compare so try to make this your longest post. Compare the plot or storylines - what the story is about. Compare the main characters. Are they similar of very different? How? Compare the settings - where and when the story happens. Compare the main messages of the story. Comment on the layouts of the books - do they include pictures, how long are they and even compare the authors' styles. That's a lot of comapring to do!

Term 3 2012

Task 8

Welcome back everyone - hope you had a good break. Here is your next task.
As you know we are having another celebration at the end of our project. This time you will be running it so we are looking for your ideas. You will be able to discuss this in Circle Time before writing your post. After the discussion, post some of your ideas on the wiki. You can post your own ideas or build on the ideas of others. Think about what you would like to happen at the celebration. What might your role be? Provide as much detail as possible in your post. What you write is a way of 'giving' to the group to make it as successful as possible.

Task 9

As you know Project Claim is also about 'giving'. Write a reflection about how you have been 'giving' to other people in the Project Claim group. Then think about how you felt when you first joined Project Claim. Imagine you were asked to give advice to a new person joining Project Claim. What would your advice be?

Task 10

So here is an act of 'giving' for you to do. Suggest one or two books for someone else to read. As well as naming the book/s, you must also explain why you think it is a good book to read.

Task 11

Think about the things you have improved in during the project. What are they? List them. Look at the posts of other students. That might give you some ideas to add to your list too.

Task 12

What would your parent/s say you have improved in while you have been in Project Claim. You might have to interview them first.
